GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis team remained undefeated in its young season by improving to 9-0 with a hard-fought 5-4 win over Bethel (IN).
In the No. 1 doubles, Emily Schellenboom (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) and Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, IN / North Central High School) won 8-4 over Alexia Pena and Kyla Heckaman. Senior Grace Brown (Middleville, MI / Thornapple Kellogg) and Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, MI / Holland Christian) were winners at No. 2 doubles with an 8-6 victory over Fatima Gutierrez and Moana Martins.
Wrapping up doubles play, Senior Alexis Ganop (Riverview, MI / Riverview Community School) and junior Cameron Cryus (Naperville, IL / Neuqua Valley) won 8-3 over Layla Jojo and Saige Rinkenberger.
In singles action, Schellenboom was outlasted by Pino at No. 1 singles with a scores of 6-4, 6-4. No. 2 singles saw Brown falling to Fatima with scores of 6-2, 6-1, 10-4 while Shoemaker couldn't get the win at No. 3 singles by losing to Heckaman 1-6, 6-2, 4-10.
Grissom picked up the first singles point for the Knights by winning 5-7, 7-5, 10-3 over Joja at No. 4 singles. Freshman Averi Lewis (Tualatin, OR / Tualatin) fell to Martins 6-2, 7-4 in No. 5 singles play. The Knights picked up the close match with Ganop winning 6-1,7-5 over Rinkeberger at No. 6 singles to secure the 5-4 victory.
Ganop's clutch match-clinching win came after she trailed 5-4 in the second set and won three straight games to close out the set and the match.
