GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's track and field team took fourth place at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic hosted by Aquinas College with a team score of 68 points.
Host Aquinas took first with 149 points with Cornerstone second (148), Davenport third (135), Calvin fourth, Grace Christian fifth (13 points) and Muskegon Community College sixth (5 points).
Sophomore Delaney Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) continued her sizzling start to the indoor season, winning the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.78.
Calvin's Cora Moore (Phoenix, Az./North Phoenix Prep) scored with a fifth place time of 27.82 in the 200 meter dash.
In the 800 meters, freshman Natalie Tebben (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian HS) was third with a time of 2:31.06.
Senior Haley Weesies (Grand Rapids, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) was fourth in the mile run in 5:41.44.
Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team place second in 4:40.76.
In the high jump, junior Clarissa Sheppard (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater HS) was seventh (4-7) and sophomore Alyssa Gustman (Newaygo, Mich./Fremont HS) eighth (4-5).
The Knights produced big points in the long jump. Junior Onyinyechi Iheme (Ikoyi Lagos, Nigeria/Rainbow School) was fourth (15-3 ½), sophomore Jessye Vanden Akker (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) fifth (14-9), senior Yasmin Banares sixth (14-4 ½) and senior Sadie Kornoelje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) eighth (13-7).
Vanden Akker added a third place finish in the triple jump (34-0 ¾).
In the weight throw, senior Waverly VerHill (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian HS) was fifth (46-5 ¼). Freshman Karen Bekhet (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) placed seventh in the shot put (35-7 ¼) with senior Rachel Herwyer (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) taking eighth (34-4 ¾).
Calvin returns to action next Friday and Saturday when it competes at the GVSU Big Meet.
