ORLANDO, Fla. – The Calvin women's tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season with a hard-fought 5-4 win over St. Mary's of Minnesota Monday afternoon.
Calvin gained two of the three doubles points to gain the early 2-1 lead.
Senior Emily Schellenboom (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central HS) claimed an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles. Senior Alexis Ganop (Riverview, Mich./Riverview Community School) and junior Cameron Cyrus (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) then gained an all-important 8-7 win at No. 3 doubles, winning the tie-breaker 8-6.
At No. 2 singles, senior Grace Brown (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg HS) was awarded a win after leading 6-1 when her opponent retired from the rest of the match.
Grissom claimed a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win at No. 4 singles. Freshman Averi Lewis (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 5 singles to close out Calvin's points and the win.
COACHES COMMENT: "I'm so proud of my team," said Calvin head tennis coach John Ross. "They competed extremely well and stayed together to pick up their first win of the spring after two wins this fall. We had excellent contribution from our entire lineup."
NEXT UP: Calvin will face Wartburg on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Orlando.
