GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Calvin ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team lost the first game of a weekend series with Indiana Tech, a matchup of nationally ranked top-10 teams. The Calvin Knights lost 5-2.
The Calvin Knights were ranked 8th nationally and the Indiana Tech Warriors were ranked 9th. Calvin suffered its first loss of the season to drop to a record of 13-1-2.
The first period put the talent of both teams on display. Four goals were scored, with an even two for each team. Cam Chabot played fabulous for Indiana Tech, scoring two goals with 16:42 remaining, and 1:32 remaining. His first goal was a result of a power play and his second goal was short-handed effort. Keith Schenkel scored first for the Knights, a power play goal with 4:15 remaining. Joel Dieleman quickly followed, scoring only 18 seconds later. The score at the end of the first was tied 2-2.
The Warriors took control in the second period, scoring 3 goals. Alex Potter, Malik Ali, and Will Campbell were the scorers for Indiana Tech. Potter's goal was a power play score. The Knights were unable to get anything going in the second as the momentum swung towards the Warriors. The score was 5-2 at the end of the second.
The third period was full of intensity and physicality. A struggle to score, neither team put the puck in the back of net for the entirety of the period. Penalties occurred often for both teams. The Warriors were called for 5 penalties in the period. The Knights struggled to stay out of penalty trouble, getting called for 7 penalties in the third. The score at the end of the third remained 5-2 as the the Warriors of Indiana Tech took the big win.
Carlos Siso was in goal for the Knights, he recorded 32 saves on the night.
COACHES COMMENT: "We suffered our first loss of the season and lost our composure in the third period," said Calvin head coach Mike Petrusma. "We will correct that aspect and look forward to Saturday afternoon."
