GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's swimming and diving team took first place at its own Calvin Quad Invitational. The Knights posted a first place team score of 1,862.5 points.
Calvin took first place in several events on Saturday. The competition was split into a morning session and an afternoon session.
The Knights opened the morning by winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:31.99. The relay consisted of senior
Noah Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS), freshman
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Oh./Home School), junior
Forrest Peterson (Middleton, Wisc./Middleton HS) and junior
Vladimir Molin (Rolling Meadows, Il./Rolling Meadows HS).
In the 400 IM, freshman
Timothy Hays (Arlington Heights, Il./Prospect HS) captured first place with a time of 4:18.91.
Calvin went 1-2 in the 100 butterfly with junior
Corey Campbell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking first (49.80) and Peterson taking second (50.14). Campbell's time ranks ninth nationally while Peterson's time ranks 12
th.
The Knights produced a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 freestyle with senior
Jacob Heeres (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) winning in a time of 143.72 with senior
Hudson DeBoer (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) second (1:44.57) and sophomore
Joshua Seidelman (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) third (1:48.16).
Calvin also went 1-2-3 in the 100 breaststroke. Gemmen was first (58.59), freshman
Joshua Krampe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) second (59.50) and senior
Bryce Miner (Cupertino, Ca./Homestead HS) third (1:00.56).
The 100 backstroke also produced a 1-2-3 Calvin finish. Senior
William Toomey (Pleasant Hill, Ia./Southeast Polk HS) won the race in a time of 52.08. Holstege was second (52.79) while sophomore
Logan Campbell (Yorkville, Il./Yorkville HS) was third (55.18).
In the three-meter diving competition, sophomore
Wilson Goodpaster (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) was third (409.00) while sophomore
Jason Perez (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell HS) was fourth (400.35).
Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team of Hays, Seidelman, DeBoer and Heeres cruised to a first place time of 7:07.02.
The Knights opened the afternoon session with the 1650 freestyle and senior
Samuel Hoover (Beverly Hills, Mich./Fraser HS) was first with a career-best time of 16:56.81 that ranks 19
th nationally. Seidelman was second in a season-best time of 17:05.09.
Calvin produced a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 backstroke with Toomey winning the race in a time of 1:55.51 while freshman
Ryan Meyer (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) was second (1:56.33) and Hays third (1:56.36).
The Knights swept the top three spots in the 100 freestyle. Heeres won the race in a time of 46.14 that ranks 10
th nationally. Holstege was second (47.14) and
Corey Campbell third (47.48).
Calvin then took the top four spots in the 200 breaststroke. Gemmen was first (2:10.16), sophomore
David Bajwa (Potomac, Md./The Heights School) second (2:13.42), Miner third (2:14.14) and Krampe fourth (2:15.14).
Peterson won the 200 butterfly in a season-best time of 1:57.09.
Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of Holstege. Peterson, Hays and Heeres capped off the meet by winning in a season-best time of 3:08.53 that ranks sixth nationally.
