WYOMING, Mich. - The Calvin men's golf team finished the fall portion of its season with a fourth-place finish at the two-day MIAA Fall Tournament on Saturday at Kaufman Golf Club.
The Knights shot a team score of 311 on Saturday (shaving six strokes off Friday's total), but were unable to move up in the final standings at the 36-hole event.
Thanks to the top four finish, the Knights qualified to play in the MIAA spring tournament that decides the conference's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Jack Marzolino (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) improved on his Friday round of 77 by carding a 75 on Saturday, while teammate
Tim Braun (Northville, Mich./Northville) also shot 75 to finished with a tournament total of 154. Marzolino tied for ninth place with his tournament score of 152, while Braun tied for 11th.
Behind them,
Gannon McDonough (Pentwater, Mich./Pentwater) shot 80,
Jacob Siebenga (Surrey, B.C./Surrey Christian) shot 81, and
Louis Breems (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) shot 82. The three players each finished between 21 and 28 in the final standings with tournament scores of 160, 162 and 163, respectively.
Matt Turcotte (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian), playing as an individual, backed up his 71 on Friday with a 74 on Saturday, making him only one-over par for the weekend and giving him a third-place tie overall.Â
Following the tournament, Marzolino and Siebenga were both named All-MIAA Second Team. Siebenga finished ninth in the final individual standings for the fall season with an average score of 77.0 in six events. Marzolino averaged 78.0 in his six events.
COACH'S COMMENT: "Today we had some good performances from freshmen
Jack Marzolino and
Matt Turcotte, who both finished top in the tournament," Calvin men's golf coach
Brian Bolt said. "As a team we had two players finish the fall season with all league honors, and our team qualified for the AQ tournament in the spring. All in all we accomplished some things with a young team and we will continue to dial it in as we prepare for an important spring season."
