Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's basketball team stormed past Adrian with a final score of 81-61 to pick their second conference win on Saturday evening at Van Noord Arena.
Calvin started the game by taking an early 9-4 lead over Adrian after a fastbreak layup by senior Alec Fruin (Beloit, WI / Turner). The Bulldogs answered right back with a 15-4 run of their own to take a 19-15 lead with 10:23 left in the game.
The Knights then came right back at the Bulldogs with a 9-0 run to take a 24-19 lead after a layup by sophomore Uchenna Egekeze (Huntley, IL / Huntley). Calvin continued to add points to its lead in the last eight minutes of the half by outscoring Adrian 12-6 and took a 36-25 advantage into halftime.
Senior Luke Morrison (Bristol, IN / Northridge) led the Knights in scoring with 9 points at halftime while Egekeze had 8 points. Calvin shot 15-42 (35.7%) from the field and 2-14 (14.3%) from the three point-line. The Knights also outrebounded the Bulldogs 29-20 in the half and 9 total assists.
The Knights gained momentum by starting the second half on a 13-4 run. The run was capped off by four straight points by sophomore Marcus Bult (Wheaton, IL / Wheaton Academy) that allowed Calvin to lead 49-29 with 14:23 left in the game.
Calvin began to pull away with the game as it led by 26 with a score of 66-40 after six straight points by Fruin.
After a layup through contact by junior Eli Sensenig (Grayslake, IL / Westlake Christian Academy), Calvin had the rest of the game in control as it led 71-52 with 3:54 left. The Knights closed out the Bulldogs with a final score of 81-61 to improve to 9-6 overall on the season and 2-2 in the MIAA.
Sensenig led the Knights in scoring off the bench with 16 points while Fruin finished with a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Egekeze also finished with 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals on the evening. Calvin shot 34-83 (41.0%) from the field and 3-22 (13.6%) from the three-point line. The Knights also outrebounded the Bulldogs 55-44 on the night and tallied 22 assists.
COACHES COMMENTS: "Well it was a win and that's good for us," said head coach Bill Sall. "We won by a good margin but that's a bit misleading because there are things we have to work on. We had great looks from three but couldn't put it away, so that's a little concerning. But we did great work on the offensive glass, and I thought were very active in those spots. I was happy with our defensive effort, but would like to see us improve offensively going forward."
