The 205th meeting between Calvin and Hope in men's basketball is scheduled to tip off Wednesday night at 8 p.m. inside Calvin's Van Noord Arena.
The series dates back to the 1920-21 season and sees Hope holding a 104-100 series lead. A year ago, Hope edged Calvin 79-77 at Van Noord Arena in the only meeting of the 2020-21 season between the two rivals. The win by Hope snapped a five-game Calvin win streak against the Flying Dutchmen.
Calvin enters Wednesday's matchup with an overall record of 8-5 and a conference mark of 1-1. Hope enters at 9-4 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA.
The Knights are led in scoring by senior guard Luke Morrison who averages 17.9 points a game with senior Thad Shymanski averaging 14.2 points and sophomore Uchenna Egekeze 11.8 points a contest. Senior Emmett Warners adds 8.5 points and 5.4 rebounds a game.
A year ago, Warners was a member of the All-MIAA First Team while Shymanski was named to the All-MIAA Second Team.
The Flying Dutchmen are led in scoring by junior wing Evan Thomas who is averaging 15.3 points and 8.3 rebounds a game while connecting on 81.6 percent of his free throw tries. Senior guard Tyler George averages 12.8 points a game and is shooting 89.2 percent from the line. A year ago, George was a member of the All-MIAA Second Team.
Junior guard Clayton Dykhouse is another important cog for Hope, averaging 12.7 points and 3.0 assists-per-contest. Senior forward Jeff Bikus is another face to watch. The 6-6 forward averages 11.1 points and 5.8 rebounds a game.
Over 204 games, Hope has outscored Calvin by 62 points (13,930-13,868) which works out to a difference of just 0.30 points per game!!
Calvin head coach Bill Sall is in his third year as head coach. He is 2-1 against Hope. Hope head coach Greg Mitchell is 6-10 against the Knights. As a player at Calvin, Sall was 7-3 against Hope. As a player at Hope, Mitchell was 4-5 against Calvin.
