GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin men's cross country took second place in the Knight Invitational with a team score of 49 points, finishing two just points out of first place.
Grand Valley St. took first place with a team score of 47.
Junior Brandan Knepper (Mechanicsburg, PA / Mechanicsburg) led the way for the Knights by taking fifth place with a time of 25:12.1 while teammate Eric Swinson (Fishers, IN / Hamilton Southeast) finished ninth with a time of 25:22.8.
Senior Ryan Vreeke (Lakewood, CA / Valley Christian) took 15th in the race with a time of 25:35.0, and Micah Meinderstma (Caledonia, MI / Caledonia) finished 22nd with a time of 25:53.8.
Freshman Luke Witvliet (Grandville, MI / Grandville) made his debut as a Knight by taking 25th with a time of 25:57.2 while William Hofmann (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI / Grosse Pointe North) finished right behind in 26th with a time of 25:59.0.
Also, Senior Noah Cummisford (Mequon, WI / Homestead) took 28th with a time of 26:02.7.
COACHES COMMENTS: "The men showed a lot of determination, and they have a lot to prove this year," said Head Coach Brian Diemer. "They had a year-and-a-half to bottle this up and pour out today for a great first showing. It feels so good to be in a major invitational today, and there was so much energy out there today. These guys run with a lot of heart and determination, but we are off to great start. We have to do some specific training, but we will be ready to go for the next race."
