GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin closed out its 2021 campaign with a 6-3 loss to Trine University. The Knights finish the season with an overall record of 6-7 and a conference record of 4-4.
Trine (14-4 overall, 6-2 MIAA) grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles play, winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Calvin picked up an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles with juniors Grace Brown (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg HS) and Alexis Ganop (Riverview, Mich./Riverview Community HS) downing Jadyn Davis and Camille Lozier 8-2. Trine overcame a 3-0 deficit to win 8-3 at No. 3 doubles and then held off a spirited charge from Calvin's No. 1 doubles team to win 8-5 and take the 2-1 lead into singles play.
In singles play, Brown was a 7-6, 6-3 winner over Davis at No. 2 singles and sophomore Cameron Cyrus (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 3 singles.
Trine rolled to straight set wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles and pulled out three-set wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
Saturday's match was the Senior Day for Calvin seniors Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) and Sydney Ellsworth (Williamston, Mich./Williamston HS).
COACHES COMMENT: "We are thankful for our seniors who have contributed to our program over the last four years," said Calvin head tennis coach John Ross who is also in his first year at helm of the women's program. "I want to thank them for accepting me as a first-year head (women's) coach and helping lead this team in a very challenging pandemic season."
