Game 1
In game one, the Knights started scoring right away on the first pitch of the game. Senior Damion Pompey (Edwardsburg, MI / Edwardsburg) hit a homerun on the first pitch of the game to give Calvin an early 1-0 lead.
Calvin continued to put runs on the board as it scored in the second inning with an RBI single from Pompey, and in the third with another RBI single by Ricky Padilla (Poway, CA / Poway). The Knights scored another run in the third as Nick Vogel put the ball in play to score Padilla from third for a 4-0 lead.
Trine struggled to get the bats get going as Junior Hayden White was pitching a fantastic game for Calvin. The Knights added more runs in the fourth inning as sophomore Caden Penn (Macomb, MI / Lutheran North) hit an RBI double to center field for the first run of the inning.
Matt Raymond (Chicago, IL / Loyola Academy) was hit by a pitch to score another run and two errors by Trine allowed Calvin to score the third run of the inning. Calvin took a 7-0 lead heading into the fifth.

Game 2
Game two featured a slow offensive start for both teams as the pitching was strong. Junior Zach Thor (Woodbury, MN / New Life Academy) had a solid game, holding the Thunder scoreless through fiving innings. Calvin's bats went cold in the game as the Knights struggled to get runners on base. Trine's pitching and defense was up to the task against the Knights holding them to no runs through five innings.
Trine finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth as an RBI single game the Thunder a 1-0 lead. The Knights had one opportunity in the top of the seventh to keep the game going. Calvin came through as the Knights were down to their last out when Penn stepped up to the plate with two runners on and hit a two-run RBI double to right field to give them a 2-1 lead. One batter prior, Peterson fell behind 0-2 in the count before lacing a single to right-center to keep the game alive. Peterson came around from first for the go-ahead run, sliding in under the tag to beat the throw from right field.
In the bottom of the seventh, Thor finished off the game for the Knights and pitched the complete game to get his third win on the season. The win also marked the second complete-game of the season for Thor. He only allowed six hits, one earned run and three strikeouts on the day. Calvin improves to 17-14 on the season and 12-8 in the MIAA to claim second place in the standings.
COACHES COMMENT: "It was a great day for our team," said Calvin head baseball coach Kevin VanDuyn. "It starts with starting pitching. Hayden White giving us 7 shutout innings set the tone for the day. In game 2, Zach Thor was spot on and he had to be because their pitcher was on too. It's been awhile since we have had two complete games in a doubleheader and that was a huge lift for our team. I also want to credit our clutch hitting in game two. Ryan Peterson really battled with two strikes and showed tremendous focus and then Caden came up with the big hit to follow. Right now, we are not making each game bigger than it is. It's important we control what we can control and focus on one game at a time."
UP NEXT: Calvin will host a conference doubleheader against Albion on Tuesday May 4 with game one starting at 2 p.m.
