Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin women's lacrosse fell to rival Hope in the MIAA Tournament Semifinals by a score of 19-9 at Zuidema Field Wednesday evening.
The game started out with Hope jumping out to a 2-0 lead to begin the game. Junior Madison Brown (Granger, IN / Penn) put the Knights on the board, but Hope responded quickly with a goal to make it a 3-1 game. Senior Allyson Mesman (Hudsonville, MI / Hudsonville) cut the deficit to one as it was 3-2 with 24:07 left in the first half.
The Flying Dutch rattled off a big 5-0 run in ten minutes of play as they took a 7-2 lead. Senior Emma Verrett (Beaver, PA / Beaver County Christian) scored again for Calvin but Hope answered right back to make it 8-3. Junior Megan Gilbert (Lansing, MI / Holt) scored another goal for Calvin, but Hope scored five more goals before halftime to take a 13-4 lead into half.
The Knights gained some life after two quick goals from Verrett and Gilbert, but the Flying Dutch had another quick response as they scored three goals to make it a 16-6 game. Brown put one in the back of the net and Verrett put two in as well to make the score 16-9 with 15:41 left.
Hope's defense held strong against Calvin's offense in the final fifteen minutes of the game while scoring three more goals. The Knights couldn't break through to score another goal and fell to the Flying Dutch 19-9.
Verrett finished with four goals while Gilbert and Brown each had two goals. Hope won the draw controls on the evening 14-13 and had more groundballs 22-18. The Flying Dutch outshot the Knights 33-25 on the evening as well.
This game was the final collegiate game for these seniors: Julia Schaefer (Clarksville, MD / Annapolis Area Christian), Allyson Mesman, Emma Verret and Megan Economou (Hartland, MI / Hartland).
Calvin closes the year with an overall record of 7-6. The Knights were the MIAA regular season co-champions with a 5-1 regular season MIAA mark.
