ALMA, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis team claimed an 8-1 conference victory at Alma Friday afternoon. The victory lifts Calvin to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in the MIAA. The Knights are now in fourth place in the MIAA standings right behind 4-2 Trine. Calvin has now won four consecutive matches.
The Knights will travel to Spring Arbor on Tuesday and and then host Trine on May 1.
Calvin won three hard-fought matches in doubles play to grab an early 3-0 lead. Senior Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) and junior Emily Schellenboom (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) were 8-6 winners at No. 1 doubles. Junior Grace Brown (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg HS) and junior Alexis Ganop (Riverview, Mich./Riverview Community HS) also teamed up for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.
Sophomore Cameron Cyrus (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) and junior Sara Kroeze (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) were 8-3 winners at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, Bonner dropped a hard-fought three-set (6-4, 2-6, 10-7) decision to Brooke Butterfield at No. 1 singles. Brown was a 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 winner over Abigal Davenport at No. 2 singles however.
Schellenboom picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win over Elizabeth Hill at No. 3 singles. Cyrus downed Emily McDonald 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Ganop rolled past Emma Lloyd 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Junior Carrie Scofield (Pioneertown, Ca./Yucca Valley HS) defeated Rachel Moran 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Spring Arbor on Tuesday for a non-conference match scheduled to begin at noon.
