Calvin Women's Lacrosse Comeback Over Britons Makes Senior Night One to Remember

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin women's lacrosse had a comeback for the history books, defeating Albion 13-12 on Calvin senior Knight Wednesday evening at Zuidema Field.

These seniors were honored before tonight's game: Julia Schaefer, Allyson Mesman, Emma Verrett, and Meghan Economou. Calvin trailed 9-3 at halftime and played down a player for much of the second half but found a way to come back for the improbable win. The victory keeps Calvin in the MIAA title chase as the Knights are 4-1 in league play, tied with Albion and Hope while Saint Mary's leads the league at 5-1 in league play.

The first half saw the game tied at 1-1 after eight minutes of play with Allyson Mesman (Hudsonville, MI / Hudsonville) scoring the first goal for the Knights. The Britons started to get some offensive rhythm going as they stretched their lead to 6-2 with about nine minutes left in the half. Junior Madison Brown (Granger, IN / Penn) scored for the Knights to get the deficit down to three.

Albion scored three more goals before halftime as Calvin was down a man the rest of the game with about two minutes left in the half. The Britons took a big 9-3 lead heading into halftime.

Calvin came ready to play in the second half as it scored three quick goals to make it a 9-6 game with twenty-three minutes left in the game. Senior Emma Verrett (Beaver, PA / Beaver County Christian) scored two of the goals and junior Megan Gilbert (Lansing, MI / Holt) scored the third. The Britons answered back with two of their own goals to extend their lead to 11-6.

Verret put away two quick goals for Calvin and made it an 11-8 game with about sixteen minutes left in regulation. Albion scored another goal to make it a 12-8 game, but Calvin didn't back down in the final fifteen minutes. The Knights tied the game at 12-12 with four straight goals with Mesman scoring two, and Verrett and Brown each having one.

The next possession Calvin won the draw control and Verrett took it all the way in transition to score and put the Knights ahead 13-12. Calvin held strong in the last four-and-half minutes as senior goalie Megan Economou (Hartland, MI / Hartland) made great saves to help the Knights claim the 13-12 victory.

The Knights dominated the draw control with 20 to the Britons' 7. Calvin also outshot Albion 36-34 on the evening. Verrett finished with six goals, Mesman finished with three, Brown with two, and Kelly Ruha (Plymouth, MN / Robbinsville Armstrong) and Gilbert each had one apiece.

COACHES COMMENTS: "Being down six at half and a player down as well, we weren't set to succeed but we knew if we started winning possessions we had to go," said Head Coach Blake Boehm. "We were a little flat in the first half and were being too strategic, and at the end of the day it was see a matchup and taking it. Even a player down we were still 7 on 7 so we needed to win possessions, draw controls, ground balls and just calling on your players to step up. They did and it was huge for us."

NEXT UP: The Knights will travel to Trine on Saturday April 17 with a start time of 1 p.m.
