The Calvin women's lacrosse team fell to St. Mary's at Zuidema Field with a score of on 16-10 Wednesday evening.

St. Mary's started the game with quickness as it jumped to an early 3-0 lead after seven minutes of play. The Knights climbed back into the game with back-to-back by seniors Emma Verrett (Beaver, PA / Beaver County Christian) and Allyson Mesman (Hudsonville, MI / Hudsonville) to make it a 3-2 game. The Belles responded with two quick goals to extend their lead to 5-2.

Calvin tried to hang with St. Mary's the rest of the half as Mesman was able to score two more goals in the half. But St. Mary's scored four more goals to push its lead to 9-4. Sophomore Eva Doorlag (Ypsilanti, MI / Saline) scored a tough shot right before half as Saint Mary's cut the deficit to 9-5 heading into halftime.

The Belles outshot the Knights 15-11 in the first half and scooped up more ground balls 15-10. Calvin led both teams in turnovers with 14 and St. Mary's only had 7. The Knights were winning lots of draw controls as they ended the half with 12 to the Belles' 3, but they struggled to capitalize on their opportunities.

The second half saw the Knights scoring first with junior Megan Gilbert (Lansing, MI / Holt) finding the back of the net and making it a 9-6 game. The Belles answered emphatically with four straight goals as they stormed back to take a 13-6 lead with 18:23 left in the game. Mesman, Gilbert and Verrett each scored another goal while St. Mary's scored one and the score was 14-9 five minutes left in the game.

St. Mary's scored two more goals and its keeper was playing excellent defense as she had 15 saves on the nights. Mesman finished the game with four goals while Verret had three goals, and Gilbert had two goals. The Knights outshot the Belles 31-26. St. Mary's led in ground balls with 30 to Calvin's 28
