GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin dropped a 7-2 conference dual match to visiting Kalamazoo Tuesday afternoon on the wind-swept Strikwerda Tennis Courts.
Calvin (2-4 overall, 0-2 MIAA) threatened to take two of the opening three doubles points but the visiting Hornets (4-0 overall, 2-0 MIAA) rallied to take two of the three doubles points and used the momentum to pull away in singles play.
Kalamazoo picked up an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles to take the early lead.
Maddie Hurley and Meghan Killmaster then overcame a 7-6 deficit at No. 3 doubles to down Calvin's tandem of sophomore Cameron Cyrus (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) and junior Sara Kroeze (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS).
Calvin's No. 1 doubles tandem of senior Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) and junior Emily Schellenboom (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) then pulled out an 8-6 win after trailing early.
In singles play, Schellenboom pulled out a thrilling 4-6, 6-2, 10-3 win at No. 2 singles for Calvin's lone singles point.
