Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Calvin scored eight unanswered goals in the second half to take control and gain a conference road at Kalamazoo Saturday night.
With the teams tied 7-7 at halftime, Calvin answered the bell in the second half, scoring six goals in the opening 15 minutes to build a 13-9 lead.
The Calvin lead ballooned to as much as an eight-goal advantage at 17-9 with 7:56 remaining.
A late Kalamazoo but the deficit down to five goals before the Knights closed the door over the final 2:35 of play to seal the win.
Senior Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian HS) matched a Calvin single-game record for goals with eight goals on 12 shots. Junior Megan Gilbert (Lansing, Mich./Holt HS) had three goals as did freshman Kelly Ruha (Plymouth, Mn./Robbinsville Armstrong HS). Junior Madison Brown (Granger, Ind./Penn HS) and senior Allyson Mesman (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) had two goals apiece.
Calvin held a 35-26 shots at goal advantage.
The match was physical as seven yellow cards were assessed.
Senior Megan Economou (Hartland, Mich./Hartland HS) had 10 saves in goal for the Knights.
COACHES COMMENT: "We're moving in the right direction," said Calvin head women's lacrosse coach Blake Boehm. ""We've been working a lot on keeping ourselves in check, playing an efficient game and capitalizing on our opportunities. We still have some work to do to get our game where we want but everyone is working hard and staying focused."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Saint Mary's next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
