KOKOMO, IND. - Calvin fell to NAIA foe Indiana University-Kokomo Saturday afternoon 5-2 in a non-conference dual match. Saturday's competition marked the opener to Calvin's 2021 schedule after the Knights played a series of exhibition matches against regional opponents in September.
Double action was played in pro set format, producing a single doubles point in the best-of-three doubles matches.
The host Cougars took two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Calvin's lone win in doubles action came at No. 1 doubles as senior Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Lowell HS) and junior Emily Schellenboom (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) combined for a hard-fought 7-5 win over Gabbie Orlando and Larissa O'Rourke.
In singles action, junior Grace Brown (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg HS) pulled out a thrilling win at No. 2 singles, defeating O'Rourke 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 including a 7-5 triumph in the third set tiebreaker.
Schellenboom also dug down for a win, doing so at No. 3 singles, topping Reese Johnson 7-6, 7-5.
