Calvin Women's Lacrosse Beaten by Britons

Box Score

ALBION, Mich. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team was edged by Albion 14-12 in a non-conference game Saturday.

The two league rivals were knotted 5-5 at halftime and remained in a nip-and-tuck competition throughout the second half with the lead changing hands four times.

Calvin (1-4) took a 6-5 lead early in the second half on a goal by senior Allyson Mesman (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS). Albion answered with two quick goals to take an 8-7 lead and later built a 10-8 advantage. Calvin roared back with three unanswered goals with Mesman, senior Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian HS) and junior Megan Gilbert (Lansing, Mich./Holt HS) scoring goals in the run.

Albion (4-2) scored twice to take a 12-11 lead. Verrett fired in a free position shot with 5:53 remaining to tie the score at 12.

The Britons were awarded a free position shot and converted on the try to take a 13-12 lead with 3:29 left. Albion won the subsequent draw control and fired home an insurance goal seconds later.

Calvin was unable to get off a shot the rest of the way as the Britons closed out the game for the win.

Mesman led the Calvin offensive attack with five goals on 10 shots. Verrett had three goals, an assist and four draw controls.

Gilbert had three goals, seven draw controls and a pair of ground balls. Sophomore Cosette Ferris had a goal and an assist. Sophomore Jessica Camp (O'Fallon, Il./O'Fallon Township HS) had a strong game in goal, producing 15 saves and scooping up three ground balls.

COACHES COMMENT: "I think we played well today," said Calvin head women's lacrosse coach Blake Boehm. "There are definitely some things we still need to improve on, but overall we're in good position. Gotta tip my hat to Jessica Camp. She stood on her head for us in goal and kept us in contention."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Trine next Saturday in its final non-conference game of the year. League opponents will then start playing each other in conference play the following week. The March 20 game against Trine is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Grand Rapids Christian High School.
