Calvin Women's Lacrosse Drops Double-Overtime Heartbreaker to Kalamazoo

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin fell to visiting Kalamazoo 14-13 in double-overtime Saturday afternoon at Eagles Stadium on the campus of Grand Rapids Christian High School.

Calvin (0-2) tied the game 13-13 on a free position shot by freshman Kelly Ruha with 1:52 left in regulation. The Knights had the ball in the final minute of regulation but had a potential go-ahead shot whistle high. Calvin won the opening draw control of the first overtime but again had a shot sail high. In the second overtime, a Calvin turnover led to a Kalamazoo drive and a subsequent Calvin foul that led to a free position attempt for the Hornets (2-0).

Kalamazoo senior Rachel Madar made good on the opportunity, burying a shot into the back of the net to complete the victory with 2:27 left in the second overtime.

The lead changed hands five times on Saturday with no team leading by more than two goals throughout the game.

Calvin led 4-3 on a goal late in the first half by sophomore Jessica Camp but Kalamazoo scored twice in the final 1:22 including with 14 seconds remaining in the opening stanza to take a 5-4 lead into the break.

The Knights fell behind 7-5 and later 9-7 in the second half but fought back to take a 10-9 lead on a goal by junior Brenna Otte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS). Madar scored three goals down the stretch in the second half to lift the Hornets into a 12-11 lead. A goal by junior Megan Gilbert (Lansing, Mich./Holt HS) tied the game at 12 with 3:22 remaining. Kalamazoo regained the lead at 13-12 on a free position shot by Hannah Heeren with 2:50 remaining. Ruhan then knotted the score with her own free position shot for Calvin with under two minutes left to play.

Gilbert had four goals to lead the Calvin attack to go with three ground balls and two draw controls won. Camp, Otte and senior Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian HS) had two goals apiece. Verrett also had two assists and won three draw controls. Camp won four draw controls. Otte also collected three ground balls. Senior Allyson Mesman (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) had a goal and an assist. Ruha had a goal and an assist while sophomore Cosette Ferris (Delafield, Wisc./Arrowhead HS) also had a goal and an assist. Junior Jessica Baker (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) had four ground balls for the Knights. Senior Megan Econmou (Hartland, Mich./Hartland HS) posted seven saves in goal.

Kalamazoo was led by Madar who scored seven goals.

Calvin outshot Kalamazoo 32-26 but Kalamazoo won 20 out of a possible 30 draw controls in the contest.

COACHES COMMENT: "It's early in the season and we are learning a lot about ourselves," said Calvin women's head lacrosse coach Blake Boehm. "We'll continue to focus on improving each day. The competitive fight is there. We just need to be more protective of our possessions and cognizant of our strategies and systems."

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Saint Mary's on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. non-conference contest.
