SAN ANTONIO, Tx. – Calvin closed out competition at the Leslie Robinson Christmas Classic with an 88-71 defeat to host Trinity University of Texas.
The game came less than 24 hours after the Knights had defeated Texas Lutheran 76-74 in overtime.
The host Tigers (10-2) used full-court pressure defense and waves of substitutes to down Calvin.
Trinity grabbed a 15-6 lead in the opening five minutes of the game and kept Calvin on its heels the rest of the way.
The Tigers used a 15-2 scoring run late in the first half to take a 48-30 halftime lead. The lead bumped up to 24 points early in the second half before a Calvin surge whittled it down to 13 points at 62-49 with 11 minutes remaining.
Calvin (6-3) got no closer the rest of the way however as Trinity pulled away for the win.
Calvin was led in scoring by senior Luke Morrison (Bristol, Ind./Northridge HS) who dropped in 12 points while senior Emmett Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 11 points and senior Alec Fruin (Beloit, Wisc./Turner HS) 10. Senior Thad Shymanski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) added eight points and in doing so, moved past Matt Veltema on the Calvin career scoring list, boosting his career total to 1,022 points, good for 23rd on the all-time Calvin list.
AJ Clark led Trinity with 18 points while Ben Hanley had 15.
Trinity held a 32-22 advantage in bench points. The Tigers shot 53.4 percent overall while Calvin shot 40.3 percent from the field. Trinity also held a 43-30 rebounding advantage over the Knights.
Calvin returns to action on December 29 and 30 when it competes at the BSN Winter Classic hosted by Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Calvin will face fifth-ranked and host Wisconsin-Oshkosh on December 29 at 7:30 p.m. (CST) and will then turn around to face Wisconsin-Stout December 30 at 2:30 p.m. (CST).
