GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's basketball team defeated William Woods University 78-55 Friday night in an exhibition game inside Calvin's Hoogenboom Gymnasium.

The game was played inside the former Calvin Fieldhouse due to the installation of a new scoreboard system inside Calvin's Van Noord Arena.

The contest featured a meeting of former coaching staff members as William Woods head coach Charles Belt was an assistant coach at Northern Michigan University under current Calvin head coach Bill Sall.

The contest remained tight through the first 10 minutes of the first half as Calvin grabbed a 20-17 lead. Calvin closed out the half on a 20-7 run to lead 40-24 at the break.

Senior Luke Morrison (Bristol, Ind./Northridge HS) was hot from the field in the opening 20 minutes, pouring in 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting.

The Knights kept the pressure on in the second half, leading by as many as 28 points before settling in for the final 23-point margin of victory.

Morrison led all scorers with 26 points which included 6-for-8 shooting from three-point range. Senior Thad Shymanski (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 11 points. Senior Jordan Katje (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) added seven points.

Calvin had 18 assists on the evening. Morrison and senior Jack Cahalane (Hartland, Wisc./Broofkield Academy) had four assists apiece. Sophomore Uchenna Ekegeze (Huntley, Il./Huntley HS) had four steals.

NEXT UP: Calvin returns to action on December 21 when it faces Texas Lutheran to open up a two-day tournament at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.
