GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin improved to 4-3 on the season with an 8-1 win over the visiting Concordia Cardinals Saturday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts. It marked Calvin's first outdoor match of 2020.

Calvin swept the doubles competition to take an early 3-0 lead.

Sophomore Emily Schellenboom (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) claimed an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Charity Felton and Taylor Kahlstorf. Sophomores Grace Brown (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg HS) and Maya Klopfenstein (Goshen, Ind./Concord HS) picked up an 8-3 win over Tina Perumulla and Kayla Verhelle at No. 2 doubles. Junior Sydney Ellsworth (Williamston, Mich./Williamston HS) and sophomore Carrie Scofield (Pioneertown, Ca./Yucca Valley HS) dropped Payton Woodruff and Chloe Smith 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Brown defeated Kahlstorf 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Schellenboom toppled Perumalla 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Bonner picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Verhelle at No. 4 singles. Freshman Cameron Cyrus (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win over Woodruff at No. 5 singles. Sophomore Sara Kroeze (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 6 singles.

COACHES COMMENT: "Knowing this was our first outdoor match without hardly any outdoor time, we talked this week about embracing being uncomfortable. Not making excuses and enjoying the competition no matter what the situation," said Calvin head women's tennis coach Tim Morey. "Our effort today represented that. It was really a solid team win with every player's performance having a positive factor in the result."
