Calvin Men's Basketball Bounced by Bulldogs in MIAA Tournament Semifinals 80-78

Box Score

ALBION, Mich. - Calvin's 2019-20 season came to a close as the Knights suffered an 80-78 defeat to the Adrian Bulldogs Friday night in the MIAA Tournament semifinals at Albion College.

The loss came in stunning fashion as Calvin held a 41-27 halftime advantage and held an 11-point lead with four minutes remaining.

A pivotal moment occurred with 4:46 left in regulation with the Knights holding a 69-60 lead. Senior Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) drew a foul on a drive to the basket. The Adrian bench was then whistled for a double technical foul, giving Calvin six free throw attempts with four coming by way of the technical fouls and two from the foul on DeVries.

Calvin proceeded to hit just 2 of the 6 charity tosses. Adrian responded with seven unanswered points to climb within four at 71-67.

A layup by junior Emmett Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) put the Knights up 73-67 but the Bulldogs followed with a free throw to make it a five point game. Adrian senior Jeremy Kalonji followed with an old-fashioned three-point play to make it a 73-71 contest with 2:08 left.

Calvin turned the ball over with 1:35 remaining and Adrian made good use of the turnover, scoring the tying basket with 1:23 left on the clock.

DeVries hit a driving jump shot to put Calvin up 75-73 with 1:08 left but Adrian's Kendall Bellamy answered with a basket moments later to tie the game at 75 with under a minute to play.

Calvin had a chance to take the lead when the Knights were fouled but two Calvin free throw attempts were off the mark with 33 seconds remaining. Calvin fouled on the rebound attempt after missing the second free throw, putting Adrian at the line. The Bulldogs made good on the opportunity, swishing two free throws to take a 77-75 lead.

Calvin then turned the ball over with 19 seconds remaining with Robert Warrick stealing the ball and slamming home a shot to give Adrian a four-point lead.

Sophomore Jordan Katje (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) converted a putback with seven seconds remaining to bring Calvin within two at 79-77. Calvin was forced to foul moments later. Kalonji split a pair of free throws to put the Bulldogs up two. Calvin inbounded the ball up to DeVries who was fouled prior to reaching half court, sending him to the line with 2.5 seconds remaining. DeVries made the first and missed the second free throw intentionally off the front of the rim. DeVries was able to get his hands on the rebound but was unable to get off a shot at the buzzer as the Bulldogs claimed the comeback win.

In the first half, Calvin connected on 6 of 12 from three-point range but proceed to hit just 1 of 8 from beyond the arc in the second half.

DeVries closed out his Calvin career with 31 points on 10 of 17 shooting to go with nine made free throws and a pair of three-point field goals. It marked his ninth 30-point scoring performance of the year, matching the Calvin single-season record originally set by Mark Veenstra during the 1975-76 season.

Junior Thad Shymanski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a big game with 28 points, finishing just two points shy of matching a career high. Warners had 10 points, eight boards and three assists. Senior Alex Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) cleared down 10 rebounds. Senior Tony DeWitte (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) had one of Calvin's seven three-point field goals.

Kalonji had a monster game with 30 points and nine rebounds with 18 of his points coming in the second half. The Bulldogs were also 25 of 30 at the free throw line (.833) while Calvin was 11 of 20 (.550). Calvin entered Friday's game ranked second nationally in free throw percentage, shooting a hair under 80 percent as a team.

The game marked the final game for DeWitte, DeVries and Bos.

COACHES COMMENT: "I can't thank this senior group enough," said Calvin head men's basketball coach Bill Sall. "A lot of times when you take over a program for the first time as a head coach, getting a senior group to buy in can be difficult with something different. From day one they have done an incredible job of buying in and being incredible leaders. They are great basketball players in their own right but in the same breath they have really done a great job of adapting themselves. That has helped the juniors, sophomores and freshmen to buy in along with them. I can't thank the seniors enough for what they did for me and this program this year."
