GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin rolled to dual meet victories over Olivet and Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon at the Venema Aquatic Center. The Knights defeated Olivet 141-81 and also topped Kalamazoo 146-90.
Calvin is now 6-4 in dual meet competition. The Knights took first place in nine events.
Calvin dominated the distance freestyle events. Freshman Jacob Iddings (Fenton, Mich./Fenton HS) took the 1,650 freestyle in a time of 17:16.21 with freshman Dane Hubers (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron HS) second (17:28.61), freshman Caleb Terschak (Wildwood, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy) third (17:36.87) and freshman James Ochoa (Oak Forest, Il./Lincoln Way East HS) fourth (17:42.10).
In the 500 freestyle, Calvin took the top five spots. Freshman Jacob Heeres (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) won the race in 4:56.05. Senior Brian Goins (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) was second (4:59.08), senior Jacob Deysher (Colorado Springs, Co./Palmer Ridge HS) (5:03.01), Hubers fourth (5:03.07) and Iddings fifth (5:04.24).
Junior Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Emil Friedman School) was a double-winner, taking first place in the 100 freestyle (47.07) and 400 IM (4:15.19).
Goins was a winner in the 200 butterfly (1:56.74) while freshman William Toomey (Runnells, Ia./Southeast Polk HS) won the 200 backstroke (1:59.50).
Sophomore Noah Holstege (Keswick, Va./The Covenant School) took the 50 freestyle (21.12). He then led off Calvin's winning 200 medley relay which clocked a time of 1:34.91. He was joined on the relay by senior Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./The Covenant School), freshman Julien Camy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Sam Norman (Fulton, Il./Fulton HS).
Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of senior Tristan Hazlett (Lutz, Fla./Home School), sophomore Trevor Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego HS), freshman Hudson DeBoer (Zeeland, Mich./Hollland Christian HS) and junior Colin Murphy (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice HS) took first place in a time of 1:28.20.
COACHES COMMENT: "We wanted to take on the long races today with the 1,650, 400 IM and 200 stroke events," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "We have been working on our warmup patterns, race strategies and toughness in practice and wanted to test ourselves. I think we are starting to see how much we have grown in many different ways which is exciting and rewarding to see."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Albion and Alma next Saturday in a triangular scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Venema Aquatic Center.
