The Calvin men's swimming and diving team traveled to the campus of Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday to compete in a triangular that featured three nationally-ranked teams.
No. 15 Calvin fell to No. 2 Denison 194-100 and also was defeated by No. 10 Carnegie Mellon 197-103.
The Knights had several standout performances in the pool. Sophomore Noah Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant School) picked up one of Calvin's victories of the day, winning the 50 freestyle in a time of 21.26. Junior Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Emil Friedman School) won the 100 freestyle (45.99) while also placing second in the 500 freestyle (4:43.93).
Freshman Jacob Heeres (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:44.24) while freshman William Toomey (Runnells, Ia./Southeast Polk HS) took fourth in the 100 backstroke (53.97).
In the 100 breaststroke, senior Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant School) was seventh (1:01.95) while senior Gabriel Kirk (Irvine, Ca./University School) was seventh (2:19.17).
Senior Brian Goins (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) was eighth in the 1,000 freestyle (10:16.18) with junior Colin Murphy (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice HS) sixth in the 200 backstroke (2:00.53).
Freshman Julien Camy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) continued his strong first-year campaign by finishing eighth in the 100 butterfly (53.49).
Calvin had strong relay performances. In the 200 medley relay, Noah Holstege, Sam Holstege, Camy and Heeres took second in a time of 1:34.89. Noah Holstege, Iturbe, Heeres and junior Sam Norman (Fulton, Il./Fulton HS) placed second in 1:23.82.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Kalamazoo and Olivet in a triangular at the Venema Aquatic Center at 1 p.m.
