GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's Tennis team fell to Kalamazoo College 6-3 on Wednesday evening at the Strikwerda Outdoor Tennis Center.
In doubles competition, the No. 1 sophomore duo of Leah Newhof (Caledonia, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian)and Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich. / Hudsonville) defeated Laura Hanselman and Sonal Bahl 8-3.
At No. 2 doubles, the team of Helen Pelak and Caroline Norton defeated sophomore Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich. / Forest Hills Central) and Maria Poortenga (Grand Rapids, MIch. / Grand Rapids Christian) 8-7 (7-5).
Closing out doubles at No. 3, the team of Maddy Winarski and Ella Knight defeated freshmen Grace Brown (Middleville, Mich. / Thornapple Kellogg) and Maya Klopfenstein (Goshen, IN. / Concord High School) 8-1.
Moving on to singles competition, Leah Newhof defeated Laura Hanselman 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2, Maddy Winarski defeated Madeline Brouwer in a three-set battle of 6-2, 7-6 (9-7).
Maria Poortenga defeated Helen 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3. At No. 4 singles, Caroline Norton defeated Maya Klopfenstein 6-0, 6-2.
At No. 5, Ella Knight defeated Grace Brown 6-2, 6-1. Closing out singles at No. 6, Sonal Bahl defeated Alexis Bonner 7-5, 7-5.
The Knights return to action on Saturday as they head to Indiana to take on Trine at 1 p.m. where they will need to get a victory to earn a spot in the MIAA league tournament.
