Kalamazoo scored its lone run in the top of the sixth, using a double and a single with two outs.
In the top of the seventh, the Hornets placed runners on second and third with a pair of two-out singles and a Calvin error. VanDuyn then bore down and closed out the game on a groundout to shortstop.
VanDuyn (4-1) stranded six Kalamazoo runners while striking out two and not issuing a walk. Junior Jeremy Clark (San Diego, Ca./Mt. Carmel HS) had two of Calvin's five hits.
GAME TWO
Calvin 5, Kalamazoo 2
Freshman Mark Primus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) tossed seven innings of shutout ball, striking out seven while walking only one. Mixing his fastball with off-speed pitches, Primus allowed only four hits.
Calvin took a 1-0 lead in the third on a two-out RBI double to right-center by sophomore Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) that plated senior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./J. Serra Catholic HS).
In the seventh, Calvin picked up another run as senior Miles Kuperus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored on a wild pitch.
Calvin added three key insurance runs in the eighth with Hung delivering an RBI single. Moments later, Hung and freshman Ryan Petersen (Glen Elyn, Il./Glenbard West HS) teamed up for a double-steal with Petersen stealing home and Hung stealing second. Hung later scored on a wild pitch to give the Knights a 5-0 lead.
Senior Steven Dogger (Holland, Mich./Holland Calvary HS) pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and then gave way to senior Justin Paauwe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) with two outs in the ninth after the Hornets had plated a pair of runs. Paauwe was able to close the door on Kalamazoo with a game-ending strikeout to pick up his second save of the season.
Petersen was 4-for-4 at the plate. Senior Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) also belted a double.
Primus picked up the win on the mound to improve to 1-1 on the season.
COACHES QUOTE: "For us, this is how we have to play," said Calvin baseball coach Kevin VanDuyn. "We need low-scoring games, get people on base and then execute on the bases when we have scoring opportunities. Our starting pitching was great. That's the formula. I'm proud of our kids. We're young and we're starting to see our young guys really develop. There was a lot of good stuff happening out there on the field today."
NEXT UP: Calvin will wrap up its four-game series with Kalamazoo on Monday as the Knights travel to Kalamazoo for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
