Softball Flips Franklin in NCAA Opener

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Calvin softball team opened the NCAA Tournament with a 3-0 victory over Franklin College on Thursday afternoon. The Knights improved to 31-8 on the year and the 31 victories established a new school record. The Knights will play the winner of the Hope versus Greenville game.

The Knights struck first in the third inning. Senior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) singled to right field to get junior Rachel Newman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) across home plate.

Junior Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) scampered across home plate on a Franklin error in the fourth inning.

Junior Abby Colon (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) blasted a no-doubt home run to center field to make it a 3-0 game.

Anna Gernant held the Grizzlies to two hits on Thursday and recorded six strikeouts.

Junior Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) and Kristen Newman led the game with two hits.

The Calvin defense was strong on Thursday with the infield picking up line drives. Sophomore Bri Noorman (Jenison, Mich./Covenant Christian) threw out Grace Paszek at first base to end the fifth inning.

Thursday was the 20th time this season that Calvin played error-free ball.

Calvin is 3-1 on the year against Hope and 1-0 against Greenville.
