Why did you choose to go to Calvin: Calvin has a prestigious speech pathology program and has many unique opportunities for students to travel abroad which also caught my attention. Calvin’s unparalleled balance between academics and athletics and the ability to be a student-athlete surrounded by a Jesus-centered community affirms my decision to attend Calvin every day.
Who is your favorite sports figure: Jenna Lodewyk (setter on Calvin’s volleyball team). She was my roommate during our time spent in the dorms and she leads her team with patience and kindness yet with a sense of urgency and commitment. In all her athletic successes, she has displayed humility and Christ-like demeanor.
What is your favorite spot on campus: I spend most of my day in classes at the DeVos Communications Center, and on the lower level is a bay of windows and some seats where I usually find myself passing time between classes or up late drinking coffee for a test early the next morning. This spot has seen my reactions to academic triumphs and defeats, and I value the community I’ve built there.
What is your favorite Bible verse: John 16:33—“I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
This verse comes immediately after Jesus predicting his death and in sensing the fear and desperation in his disciples, he gives them peace. Too often my first reaction to a situation is to freak out and become anxious of something out of my control, but this verse gives me rest and assurance that regardless of anything that happens to me in this lifetime, our God has overcome the world.
What is your favorite food: I love grilled cheese from Uncle Cheetah’s Soup Kitchen and any of their soups
