Women's Tennis Edged at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Calvin women's tennis team closed the regular season with a 5-4 loss at Kalamazoo on Saturday. The loss sends Calvin into a three-way tie for second place and gives Saint Mary's the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tournament. Calvin finishes the regular season at 13-6 on the year and 6-2 in MIAA play.

"Today is not the outcome we hoped for," said head coach Kevin VanHaitsma. "We knew today would be tough. Kalamazoo is a really good team. We have to now prepare for a battle at Saint Mary's."

The freshman team of Leah Newhof (Caledonia, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) defeated Maria Franco and Sonal Bahl at No. 1 doubles, 8-4.

Leah Newhof then spoiled senior day for Maria Franco at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-0.

Sophomore Anna Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) defeated Helen Pelek at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-3.
