ANGOLA, Ind. – The Calvin softball team finished the 2018 regular season with a split at No. 16 Trine. The Knights took the first game to eliminate Trine from the MIAA Tournament, 7-0. The Thunder stuck back in game two 5-7.

Senior Kaley Frank (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) struck first on Saturday with a two-run blast to center field that scored junior Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley).

In the fourth inning, Anna Gernant doubled to left field to score freshman Grace Stock. Kaley Frank then scored Anna Gernant on an infield single.

Junior Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) sent the second ball out of the park with a shot over the fence in center field to send in junior Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg). Later in the fifth inning, Anna Gernant scored Grace Stock on a single.

In the circle, Anna Gernant kept the No. 16 ranked Thunder to only two hits. She also finished with nine strikeouts. Grace Stock led the game with three hits.

Trine took the lead early in game two with three runs in the first inning and a run in the third inning.

Calvin cut into the lead with two runs in the third inning. Maddie DeGroot tripled to left field that scored junior Kristen Newman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea). Senior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) then safely crossed DeGroot across home plate.

The Knights tied the game in the fourth inning. Maddie DeGroot singled through the left side of the infield to score sophomore Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East). Jessica Brasser then scored DeGroot on an error.

Trine took the lead back with three runs in the fifth inning.

Sophomore Mallory Hoatlin (Grand Rapids, Mich./Kenowa Hills) scored sophomore Bri Noorman (Jenison, Mich./Covenant Christian) on a double in the seventh inning.

Freshman Ellie Borst (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) recorded four strikeouts.
