Women's Tennis Falls to Hope

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's tennis team fell to the Flying Dutch of Hope on Saturday afternoon, 8-1. Hope entered the match ranked 10th in the central region and improved to 2-0 in the MIAA. Calvin moves to 7-5 in 2018 and is 0-1 in the MIAA.

"We knew that we were going to be tested today," said head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "I was pleased with how we fought. Anna did a good job today and earned that victory. I thought we also battled on a lot of courts this afternoon."

The freshman duo of Leah Newhof (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) and Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) fought hard at No. 1 doubles, but fell, 8-6.

The lone victory for Calvin came at No. 3 singles, where sophomore Anna Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) defeated junior Taylor LaBarge, 6-2, 6-1.

Freshman Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central) took the first set from freshman Bailey Chorney, 6-3, but fell in the next set and the tiebreaker.

Calvin is scheduled to return to play on Tuesday at Alma.
