Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's lacrosse team opened MIAA play with a victory over Adrian on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon. The Knights put away the Bulldogs, 17-6.
The Knights scored two goals in the opening minute. Junior Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) snuck the ball past the Bulldog keeper off a pass from sophomore Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian). Junior Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) then sprinted down the field untouched by the defense and scored seven seconds later.
Leading 2-1, junior Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) had a shot that was too hot for Hannah Emerson to handle. Pepper would continue to pepper the Adrian net and scored the next three Calvin goals.
Senior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) broke the Pepper scoring streak with a goal of her own.
Up a player, Lauryn Slachter struck again off a pass from Kelly Pepper.
Emma Verrett scored her first goal of the game with 9:14 left in the first half.
Over the next four minutes, Amanda Davio, Emma Verrett and Emma Tilma all scored.
Calvin walked into halftime with a 12-4 lead.
Kelly Pepper opened the second half scoring.
Senior Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior School) got on the scoreboard with a free position shot.
Amanda Davio struck two minutes later.
With 14:20 remaining, Lauryn Slachter scored off a pass from junior Genevieve Schneemann (Farmington, Mich./Farmington) and Kelly Pepper closed the Calvin scoring on a free position shot.
Lauryn Slachter filled up the stat sheet on Saturday with a game-high seven draw controls with seven shots on goal.
The six goals from Kelly Pepper tied her career high.
Junior Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) was credited with the victory and recorded five save. Freshman Meghan Economou (Hartland, Mich./Hartland) finished with three saves.
Emma Hall notched a game-high three caused turnovers.
Calvin outshot Adrian on Saturday, 37-18.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday at Alma.
