Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 2 ranked Calvin men's soccer team closed out competition at the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament with a 3-0 victory over Lake Forest College Saturday afternoon at Zuidema Field.
With the win, Calvin captured the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament title for the second straight year and for the seventh time in school history. The Knights finished as the only team in the four-team tournament to finish 2-0-0 with Ohio Wesleyan and Hope both finishing 1-1-0 and Lake Forest 0-2-0.
With seven tournament titles to its credit, Calvin matches Hope for most titles won in the tournament that began in 2001.
Calvin (2-0-0) took a 2-0 halftime lead using a pair of goals just 21 seconds apart. Junior
Jacob Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) put the Knights on the board on a run through the left side of the box after receiving a lead pass from sophomore
Jacob Lyon (Holt, Mich./Lansing Christian HS). Witte beat Lake Forest goalkeeper Jan Roessler with a burst and slid a shot inside the far post in the 31st minute of play.
Just 21 seconds later, Calvin pressed again and was rewarded when junior
Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, Ia./Hempstead HS) was taken down in the box and was awarded with a penalty kick. McCaw made good on the penalty to give the Knights a 2-0 lead.
Calvin capped off the victory with a goal by sophomore Hunter Olsen (Canton, Mich./Canton HS) with 3:12 left in regulation. The goal was ignited by a quick one-two passing combination between McCaw and Witte with both players drawing an assist on the play.
Calvin outshot Lake Forest 22-8 and held a 10-2 edge in corner kicks. Senior
Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) had five saves for Calvin in posting his first clean sheet of the year.
"We feel great. It was a good team performance and that is what we were looking for today - ending the weekend on a strong note," said Calvin assistant coach Taylor Clarke. "We preach patience and confidence on offense and I thought our guys did a great job of staying patient and believing that the scoring chances would come. Getting a shutout was also huge. It was a complete group effort and it helps build confidence as a team."
Calvin will now prepare to travel to Ohio next weekend as it will journey to Case Western Reserve next Friday and to Oberlin College on Saturday for a set of non-conference games.
