Box Score ANGOLA, Ind. – The Calvin women's lacrosse team completed a perfect 8-0 season in the MIAA with a 19-6 season. This is the second time in program history that the Knights have gone 8-0 in MIAA play. The Knights broke two MIAA records this year with two shutouts and allowed only 31 goals, the fewest in the eight-game era. With the victory, Calvin is now 10-5 on the year.
"It is a great accomplishment to go undefeated in the MIAA," said Calvin head coach Blake Boehm. "With that being said, we still have a lot we want to accomplish and things we need to improve on. We know we will be tested in the MIAA Tournament and we are excited for the challenge."
Sophomore Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) started the scoring 56 seconds into the game with an unassisted goal.
Senior Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) scored on a free position shot to give Calvin a 2-0 lead.
Freshman Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian) found the back of the net to push the Calvin lead to three.
One minute later, Emily Cefaratti scored her second free position goal of the day.
Trine scored the next two goals to make it a 4-2 game.
With seven minutes left in the first half, Kelly Pepper scored the next three goals of the game, two coming from free position shots.
Freshman Jamie Van De Burg (Lowell, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) scored her lone goal of the game with 2:47 left in the first half.
Calvin scored three goals in the final 63 seconds of the first half, with goals from Emma Verrett, Emily Cefaratti, and sophomore Grace Einfeld (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian).
Calvin went into halftime leading the Thunder, 11-2.
The Knights opened the second half on a 7-0 run. Emily Cefaratti led all players with three goals, junior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) tallied two goals, and Grace Einfeld and Freshman Elizabeth Wiley (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage Christian) both notched one goal. The goal was the first career goal for Wiley at Calvin.
The Thunder scored the next four goals.
With 45 seconds remaining, Emily Cefaratti scored her seventh goal of the game.
Sophomore Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) picked up her 10th victory of the season and recorded one save.
Emily Cefaratti led all players with five ground balls. Junior Madeline Baas (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) had nine draw controls.
The Knights caused a season-high 21 turnovers on Saturday. Emily Cefaratti and Jamie Van De Burg both caused four turnovers.
The Knights host Albion on Wednesday in the MIAA Tournament. Albion was given the tiebreaker in a three-way tie for fourth place with Adrian and Kalamazoo. Calvin defeated Albion on the road, 10-6.
