KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 conference dual match at Kalamazoo College Saturday afternoon. The Knights are now 8-5 overall and 1-2 in MIAA competition.
Ranked 37th nationally and eighth in the Central Region, Kalamazoo took two of the three doubles points.
Calvin's lone doubles point came at No. 3 doubles as junior Liz Turner (Audobon, Pa./Delaware County Christian HS) and sophomore Lark Foote (Okemos/Okemos HS) came-from-behind to claim a 9-7 win over the Hornet tandem of Eloise Germic and Alexandra Oswalt.
Kalamazoo's No. 1 doubles team of Sarah Woods and Sabrina Dass dispatched Calvin's duo of juniors Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, Ca./San Dimas HS) and Claire Spoelhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS) 8-1 while Maria Franco and Sonal Bahl of Kalamazoo defeated Calvin's No. 2 doubles group of sophomore Jessica Bouma (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and sophomore Kari Kroeze (Holland/Holland Christian HS) 8-4.
Kalamazoo (4-8 overall, 2-0 MIAA) then clinched the match with wins at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles. Ranked #19th nationally, Woods defeated Benzel 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Dass defeated Spoelhof 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Franco defeated Bouma 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
Calvin continued to fight however with sophomore Micaela Seazzu (Albuquerque, NM/Delaware County Christian HS) downing Germic 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles while Kroeze rallied for an epic 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 win at No. 6 singles. Katie Clark of Kalamazoo claimed a 7-5, 6-4 win over Bowman at No. 5 singles to complete the competition.
"I thought we played pretty well, " said Calvin women's tennis coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "Kalamazoo came out quick. They were strong at the top of their lineup. We gave them a run but they were the better team today."
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Albion at 4 p.m.
