ADRIAN, Mich. – The Calvin women's team picked up an important MIAA victory on Friday afternoon at Adrian. The Knights defeated the host Bulldogs, 9-0. The win moves Calvin to 4-2 in the MIAA and 11-6 overall.
"I am very pleased with how we played today" said head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "The team responded very well after the loss on Wednesday. We came out strong in doubles and played solid across the board in singles. We played with great focus and intensity from the first point of the match. Today was a good win, but we now have to focus again and get ready for Olivet tomorrow."
The junior duo of Ellie Benzel and Claire Spoelhof earned the victory over Amber Laginess and Morgan Spencer at No. 1 doubles, 8-0. At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Jessica Bouma and sophomore Micaela Seazzu won, 8-1. Junior Liz Turner and sophomore Lark Foote completed the doubles sweep at No. 3 doubles, downing Olivia Neumann and Victoria Watson, 8-2.
Ellie Benzel was victorious at No. 1 singles, edging Arielle Williams, 7-5, 6-4.
Claire Spoelhof earned the victory over Renae Adams Almasy at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-0.
At No. 3 singles, Jessica Bouma swept Morgan Spencer, 6-0, 6-0.
Micaela Seazzu bounced Amber Laginess at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
Freshman Alyssa Bowman made quick work of Olivia Neumann at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
Sophomore Kari Kroeze completed the sweep at No. 6 singles, downing Victoria Watson, 6-4, 6-1.
The Knights return right back to action on Saturday as they travel to Olivet. With today's win, the Knights stand in third place in the MIAA at 4-2, ahead of Olivet and Saint Mary's, who are tied at 3-2.
