Box Score WHEATON, IL - The Calvin men's lacrosse evened its record at 2-2 on the season with an exciting 9-8 non-conference victory over the University of Dubuque Wednesday evening in a game played at Wheaton Academy.
Calvin led 5-2 at halftime and then held a 7-6 advantage heading in the fourth quarter. Calvin held an 8-7 lead when senior Jonathan VanderLaan broke free for a goal with just 1:10 to play to put the Knights up 9-7.
Dubuque won the ensuing faceoff and marched quickly down the field to score a goal with just under a minute to play, trailing 9-8.
Dubuque was then able to gain possession in the closing seconds but the Knights fended off a handful of shots at goal to hang on to the win.
"It was definitely a game that gets your blood pressure going," said first-year head coach Kyle Hofstaedter with a laugh after the game. "It was a really gutsy effort by our guys and we did everything we could to hang on. I give our guys a ton of credit for fighting hard to get this win."
Calvin will host Capital University in a non-conference game Saturday at 2 p.m. at Aquinas College.
