Box Score DELAWARE, OH - The Calvin men's basketball opened its 2015-16 campaign with an 83-77 victory over Waynesburg College at the Great Lakes Challenge hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.
Friday's game matched a pair of coaching associates as Waynesburg head coach Mark Christner was the long-time assistant men's basketball coach under Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek.
Friday's game turned out to be a tightly-fought contest as the Knights led 39-33 at halftime.
Calvin built a 10-point lead at 51-41 but Waynesburg remained in contact, closing to within three at 63-60 and then tied the game at 68 with just under five minutes remaining.
Calvin was able to get to the free throw line with frequency down the stretch to pull away for the win.
All five of Calvin's starters notched double-digits in scoring led by senior Austin Parks (Niles/Niles HS) and junior Brad Vissser (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS) who had 15 points apiece. Senior Jordan Daley (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Michael Welch (Stevensville/Lakeshore HS) had 13 points apiece with Welch notching a double-double, adding 10 rebounds. Junior Cam Denney (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell HS) added 11 points.
Calvin shot 43.1 percent from the field and also went to the free throw line 45 times but connected on only 27 for a 60 percent clip.
Calvin will face host Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday at 1 p.m.
