Calvin Women's Tennis Opens Season With 8-1 Win Over Cornerstone

The Calvin women's tennis team opened its season on Friday with an 8-1 non-conference dual match victory over Cornerstone. The match was the opening match for first-year head coach Kevin Van Haitsma at the helm of the Knights.

With a roster of just five players, Cornerstone conceded matches at three doubles and six singles before the match began.

Up 2-0, Calvin then split the remaining doubles points as Calvin's number-one tandem of junior Megan Visser and freshman Claire Spoelhof defeated Heidi Boesl and Ashley Greene 8-3. Cornerstone's number-two squad of Janie Silvers and Allison Rusticus gained a point back by defeating Calvin's Bethany Zoerhof and Ellie Benzel 8-4.

Calvin then claimed the remaining singles points as Visser defeated Boesl 6-0, 6-0 at one singles; Spoelhof defeated Nicole Kunnen 6-4, 7-6 at two singles, Zoerhof defeated Silvers 6-0, 6-1 at three singles, Benzel defeated Rusticus 6-1, 6-1 at four singles and freshman Liz Turner defeated Ashley Green 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

Friday's match was played inside Calvin's Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.

Calvin returns to action next Friday when it travels to Wheaton College (IL) for a match against the Thunder. Calvin will then face Coe the following afternoon in Wheaton, Illinois.
