Calvin defeats Olivet

Calvin traveled to the home of the Olivet Comets Wednesday afternoon and came away witih a handful of first-time performances as the Knights claimed a 5-1 victory. The victory by Calvin (7-4, 3-1 MIAA) was its first road win of year while sophomore Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA) scored his first collegiate hat-trick for the Knights.

Cosnek got the Knights rolling in the first half with his first goal hitting the back of the net just 32 seconds into the match. Freshman Maurice Wright (Wauwatosa East) fed Cosnek with the leading pass. The Comets did not back down and they tied the game at 1-1 with a goal in the 15th minute, scored off the foot of freshman Tren Bronsink.

Wright did not let Olivet (3-9 overall, 1-4 MIAA) hang on to the tie much longer however when he ripped in a shot off a Joel Vande Kopple (Grand Rapids Christian) pass in the 18th minute. Freshman David Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian) scored his second goal of the season, ripping in an unassisted shot in the 29th minute to complete the first half scoring.

Calvin continued to pepper the Olivet goal in the second half, but could not find the net until Cosnek scored unassisted at 78:58. Cosnek added the Knights' final insurance goal in the 87th minute from a Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls Christian) pass.

Calvin outshot Olivet 41-4 throughout the match, and while Olivet's only shot on goal went in, only 22 of Calvin's shots made it on net.

Sophomore Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) went the distance for the Knights in goal but did not have a save.
With the win, Calvin moved into a second place with Kalamazoo in the MIAA standings, two points back of league-leading Hope which edged the Hornets 1-0 Wednesday afternoon.

Calvin will hit the pitch this Saturday when it hosts Hope following the women's soccer game, which starts at noon. Both of Saturday's game will be aired via RealAudio on the Calvin web site at: WWW.Calvin.edu/sports with Josh Miller and Ross Weener calling the action.
