Calvin Women’s Volleyball Falls in Four to Augustana

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The ninth-ranked Calvin University women's volleyball team closed the Pikes Peak Challenge at Colorado College with a 3-1 defeat to Augustana College (Ill.) by the scores of 25-17, 25-13, 20-25 and 25-18 on Saturday.

Augustana (2-2) used strong starts to three of the four sets to overtake Calvin (2-1) and hand the Knights their first defeat of the season.

The Knights struggled at the start of each of the first two sets, falling behind 11-4 on the way to a 25-17 first set that went for the Vikings, and then 11-5 in a 25-13 second set to fall behind 0-2 in the match.

Calvin flipped the script in the third set with an 11-5 start, but Augustana answered with several runs and held a 20-17 lead late before the Knights finished the set on an 8-0 run. Allison Moore (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter Christian) recorded the final kill to win the set 25-20 and force a fourth set.

The Vikings answered in the fourth set. Calvin trailed 9-7 early before Augustana scored eight of the next ten points to open up a 17-9 lead before closing out the win.

Mary Boa (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood International Charter) led Calvin with 10 kills and a .474 attack efficiency to go with three blocks. Sarah Bradley (Clarkston, Mich./Everest Collegiate) added nine kills on the attack.

Olivia Peterson (Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon) finished with 26 assists and 10 digs, while Tryna Vander Zwaag (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian) also finished with 10 digs and two service aces.

NEXT UP: Calvin women's volleyball will return to action on Friday, September 11, when it plays in the MIAA/NCAC Challenge hosted by Hope College. The Knights will play one match on Friday against Ohio Wesleyan University at 5:00 PM.
