HOLLAND, Mich. – The 15th-ranked Calvin University women's volleyball team opened the weekend MIAA/NCAC Challenge with a 3-0 sweep of Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) on Friday at Hope College.
Calvin (3-1) swept OWU (1-4) by the scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-22.
The Knights took a commanding 17-9 lead to open the match before the Battling Bishops stormed back with a 5-0 run. OWU cut the Calvin lead as close as 22-20 down the stretch but the Knights took the set on a service error to win 25-22 and take a 1-0 overall lead.
Sarah Bradley (Clarkston, Mich./Everest Collegiate) led the Knights with four kills while
Mary Boa (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood International Charter) and
Allison Moore (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter Christian) each added three kills.
Calvin controlled the second set from start to finish with a 6-1 run in the middle of the set helping put the game away for the Knights. Calvin hit .267 on the attack for the set with Bradley once again leading the charge with four kills while Boa recorded three kills and two blocks.
OWU made a late run in the third set, cutting a 23-17 Calvin lead to 23-22 with a 5-0 run, but the Knights won the final two points on a service error and a block by
Caralee Schipper (Mount Brydges, Ontario/Strathroy District Collegiate Institute) and
Kate Van Appledorn (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) to win the match. Boa once again was strong on the attack with five kills in the set while
Tryna Vander Zwaag (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian) finished with five digs.
Lina Kasuboski (Racine, Wis./Union Grove) recorded four service aces in the set.
Boa finished the match with 11 kills and two solo blocks. Bradley added nine kills while Moore hit .533 and recorded eight kills without an error.
Vander Zwaag and
Olivia Peterson (Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon) each had nine digs for Calvin, with Peterson also recording a team-best 24 assists. Van Appledorn led the Knights with four blocks.
NEXT UP: Calvin women's volleyball will return to action at Hope College for day two of the MIAA/NCAC Challenge. The Knights will face Denison University at 12:30 PM, followed by a match against Wittenberg University at 2:30 PM.
