HOLLAND, Mich. – The Calvin women's track and field grabbed early control of the MIAA Championships, building a first place team score of 78 points, 10 points ahead of Hope and 28 points ahead of Trine.
Calvin crowned two event champions on Thursday.
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, senior
Sophie Bull (Denver, Co./Denver Christian HS) repeated as MIAA champion in the race, doing so in an MIAA-record time of 10:39.05, breaking the previous record of 10:44.31 set by Hope's Erin Hermann in 2016. Bull led a 1-3-8 Calvin finish in the race with freshman
Ayla Holben (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS) taking third in a career-best time of 11:06.85 that ranks 29
th nationally. Graduate student
Alaina Smith (Sterling, Il./Seoul Foreign School) was eighth in a time of 11:35.71.
Senior
RyAnn Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington HS) captured her second MIAA shot put title including her first since 2023, winning Thursday with a throw of 43-8. She was part of a 1-2 Calvin finish in the event with sophomore
Ella Easterling (Norton, Oh./Norton HS) taking second with a career-best throw of 40-6 ¾.
The Knights went 4-7 in the hammer throw with junior
Mikah Bazuin (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center HS) taking fourth with a season-best throw of 140-2 while sophomore
Lily Burns (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) was seventh (132-11).
Calvin went 2-7 in the long jump with senior
Julienne Strydom (Meyerton, South Africa) unleashing a season-best jump of 18-3 ¼ to place second with sophomore
Alina Veltkamp (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) taking seventh in 17-4.
Senior
Laura Robotham (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) was third in the pole vault (10-2).
Calvin capped off its Thursday night scoring in the 10,000 meters with sophomore
Alexis Ball (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) fourth (37:19.12) and freshman
Brynn Ellenbecker (Commerce, MI/Walled Lake Northern) fifth in a career-best time of 37:19.77. Sophomore
Jonathah Bouwman (Grand Rapids, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) was seventh in a career-best time of 37:52.02.
Calvin had a strong day in the prelims of the track events.
The Knights advanced four to the championship finals in the 100 meter hurdles led by senior
Mia DeJonge (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) who had the top prelims time in 14.55. Sophomore
Cadence Drougal (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) was second (14.78), freshman
Abby Lambers (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) fifth (15.04) and freshman
Ava Sanchez-Mustapha (Okemos, Mich./Lansing Christian HS) seventh (15.12).
Calvin put four into the championship finals of the 400 meter dash. Freshman
Alison Bailey (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey HS) had a career-best time of 57.93 to lead the Calvin pack. Sophomore
Jillian Tunnicliff (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph HS) had a career-best time of 59.32 with sophomore
Jessica Bossenbroek (Holt, Mich./Holt HS) advancing in 59.38 and sophomore
Emerson Nordbeck (Livonia, Mich./Franklin HS) also qualifying in 59.77.
In the 100 meter dash, Calvin qualified three with graduate student
Sydney Radigan (Portland, Ore./St. Stephen's Academy) clocking in at 12.39, freshman
Rayn Rutley (Fenton, Mich./Fenton HS) right behind at 12.57 and
Mia DeJonge advancing in 12.63.
A trio of Knights will run in the championship finals of the 800 meters. Sophomore
Kennedi Wood (Comstock Park, Mich./Sparta HS) was third in the prelims in 2:17.23 with freshman
Emma Wierenga (Grafton, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) fourth (2:17.41) and sophomore
Peyton Ludwig (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) fifth (2:18.13).
Four Knights will run in the championship finals of the 400 meter hurdles. Lambers had the second-fastest time of the prelims in 1:06.88 with freshman
Annika DeJong (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore HS) third (1:07.47), Sanchez-Mustapha fourth (1:07.99) and senior
Marcail Schuurmann (Lombard, Ill./Timothy Christian HS) fifth (1:08.19).
Radigan (25.30) and Bailey (25.49) both advanced to Friday's 200 meter championship finals.
