Five Members of Calvin Men’s Volleyball Team Earn MCVL Honors

Five members of the Calvin men's volleyball team earned postseason honors from the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) on Thursday.
 
Head coach Aaron Sagraves was named the league's Coach of the Year, while Gabriel Laughlin (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Michigan Aviation Academy) was named All-MCVL First Team. Nick Bultje (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian), Brady Gudauskas (Naperville, Ill/Neuqua Valley) and Daniel Rua (Medellin, Colombia/Colegio Canadiense) were each named All-MCVL Second Team.
 
This marks the first time any Calvin men's volleyball player has earned First or Second Team honors from the MCVL.
 
The honors come after a season in which the Knights finished with a 20-4 record overall and went 7-2 in conference play, good for third place in the final league standings.
 
The Knights will return to action on Friday, April 10, when it plays Trine University in the semifinal round of the MCVL Tournament at 4:00 PM at Wittenberg University. The winner of that match will advance to the tournament final, which will be played at 3:00 PM at Wittenberg on Saturday, April 11.
 
Gabriel Laughlin
 
Laughlin earned First Team honors after being named Honorable Mention All-MCVL each of the last two years. This season, Laughlin ranked sixth in the MCVL with 3.28 kills per set in nine conference matches with a .398 attack efficiency that ranked second in the conference. The senior right side hitter also averaged 0.31 service aces, 0.83 blocks  and 2.0 digs per set in league play.
 
Laughlin averaged 2.78 kills per set over the full season with a .302 hitting percentage to go with 1.69 digs per set, 0.75 blocks per set and 0.27 service aces per set.
 
Nick Bultje
 
Bultje earned Second Team honors following two seasons of being named Honorable Mention All-MCVL. In conference play, the junior middle blocker ranked second in the MCVL with an average of 1.27 blocks per set. He also hit .348 (fifth) with 1.77 kills per set.
 
For the season, Bultje finished with 1.11 blocks per set, good for fifth in all of NCAA III, and ranked 30th in NCAA III with a .370 attack efficiency while averaging 1.97 kills per set.
 
Brady Gudauskas
 
Gudauskas won his first All-MCVL honor as a junior after averaging 2.19 kills per set during league play. An outside hitter, Gudauskas hit .269 on the attack while also ranking second in the conference with 0.45 service aces per set. On defense, he recorded 1.55 digs per set and 0.39 blocks per set.
 
This season, Gudauskas averaged 2.54 kills per set with a .291 attack efficiency while leading all MCVL players in both service aces (39) and aces per set (0.49). He also averaged 1.44 digs per set for the season.
 
Daniel Rua
 
Rua earned his first All-MCVL honor in his first season with the Knights playing out the outside. The junior averaged 2.5 kills per set in nine conference matches with a .259 hitting percentage while also averaging 0.18 service aces per set.
 
For the season, Rua recorded 2.64 kills per set with a .321 attack efficiency and 19 total service aces.
 
Aaron Sagraves
 
Sagraves earned MCVL Coach of the Year honors in his first season as the program's head coach. In his debut season, Sagraves led the team a program-record 20 wins, its highest ever conference finish and its first MCVL Tournament appearance.
