GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University women's tennis team advanced to the MIAA Tournament Final on Saturday (May 2) with a 4-1 win over Saint Mary's College (Ind.) in the MIAA Tournament semifinal on Thursday at Strikwerda Tennis Center.
Calvin (10-7) scored the win over Saint Mary's (18-8) by taking two doubles matches and then three of the four completed singles matches.
In doubles, the Knights earned a 1-0 lead thanks to a 6-2 win by the two-doubles team of
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids), and a 6-3 win by the three-doubles team of
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and
Sabrina Lopez (Steger, Ill./Illiana Christian).
In singles, the Belles won the point in the fifth spot in the line-up, but Calvin got wins from
Ryan Morey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern), Hooker and Lopez to finish off the match.
Morey won 6-3, 7-5 in two singles. Hooker won in four-singles 6-1, 6-0, while Lopez won in six-singles 6-4, 6-2.
NEXT UP: The Calvin women's tennis team will return to action on Saturday, May 2, when it plays at Hope College in the MIAA Tournament final at 2:00 PM.
