ST. JOSEPH, Mich. – The Calvin University women's tennis team earned a 5-2 win at Saint Mary's College (Ind.) on Saturday for its fifth consecutive win.
The Calvin (7-6, 4-1 MIAA) win marked the first defeat in conference play for Saint Mary's (16-6, 5-1 MIAA) and gives the Knights four consecutive wins in league play.
The Knights earned the doubles point thanks to a 6-4 win by the two-doubles team of
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) and a 6-2 win in three-doubles by
Sabrina Lopez (Steger, Ill./Illiana Christian) and
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central). The one-doubles team of
Ryan Morey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) and
Marina Ribeiro (santos Sal Paolo, Brazil/Santa Cecilia) fell 6-4, but the two wins gave the Knights a 1-0 overall lead.
In singles, Morey (6-1, 6-2), Hooker (6-3, 6-1) and Lopez (6-2, 6-2) posted dominant performances in straight sets wins, while Holman (7-5, 2-6, 7-5) battled to a three-set win in the third spot in the line-up to give the Knights four of the six matches and the overall win.
