HOLLAND, Mich. – The Calvin University men's lacrosse team suffered its first defeat of the conference season in a 19-7 defeat at Hope College on Saturday.
Hope (15-0, 5-0 MIAA) jumped in front early with a big first period and held off Calvin (11-3, 4-1 MIAA) the rest of the way in the battle between the last two undefeated MIAA teams heading into the final week of the regular season.
The Flying Dutchmen scored the first four goals of the game, including two early scores just 20 seconds apart with 11:24 and 11:04 left in the first quarter. Calvin answered with first-quarter goals from
Colin TeBrake (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Northview) and
Braylon Moore (Rockford, Mich./Rockford), but Hope added two more tallies in the quarter to take a 6-2 lead.
TeBrake added his second goal of the game with 5:02 left in the second quarter, but the Flying Dutchmen outscored the Knights 3-1 in that quarter on the way to a 9-3 halftime lead.
Hope was able to put the game away in the third quarter, scoring five unanswered goals early before the Knights got on the board again on a goal from
Braden Carpenter (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville).
David Blackmon (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) and Carpenter added goals in the fourth quarter for the Knights.
Jordan Warners (Orange, Calif./Crean Lutheran) assisted on four Calvin goals and recorded three ground balls for the Knights.
Sawyer Richards (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) had three caused turnovers, while
Nate Hanson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) won 16 of 25 faceoffs and had 10 ground balls.
Soren Thiemann (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) stopped 11 shots in net for the Knights.
NEXT UP: Calvin men's lacrosse will return to action on Wednesday, April 22, when it hosts Kalamazoo College in the regular season finale at 7:00 PM. The game will also be the Knights' "Faceoff Against Cancer" game.
