SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Calvin University women's tennis team earned a 4-3 win in a non-conference tune match at Lawrence Tech on Friday.
Calvin (6-6) earned its fourth straight win with the help of a strong start in doubles play before winning three of the six singles contests over Lawrence Tech (7-9) to clinch the win.
The Knights swept the three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead, as the three-doubles team of
Sabrina Lopez (Steger, Ill./Illiana Christian) and
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) won 6-1, the one-doubles team of
Ryan Morey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) and
Marina Ribeiro (santos Sal Paolo, Brazil/Santa Cecilia) won 6-3, and the two-doubles team of
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) won 6-4.
Needing three of the six singles matches to secure the overall win, the Knights got straight sets wins Hooker (6-3, 6-3) and Lopez (6-1, 6-0) in the five and six spots in the line-up.
The other point came from the two-singles spot, where Morey dropped the first set 3-6, but won the second set 7-5 and then the third-set tiebreaker 10-4 to help clinch the win.
NEXT UP: Calvin women's tennis will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, April 18) when it travels to Saint Mary's College (Ind.) for a match scheduled to start at 11:00 AM.
